I did remove the canister but it wasn't necessary if you've removed hose #20. The fender has to be peeled back quite a ways. Once it's out of the way lay on your back and look straight up into that side of the wheel well--you'll see the shut-off valve attached to the inner fender via rubber says or metal clips.

(Or you could reach up into the fender well--it's quite high--and grab the other end of the hose and follow it to the valve.)

Hope this helps!

this seems like a great post. I will have to read it carefully. When i had a p0440, It took a while to find.
I found the canister and pulled vacuum on the three lines. Found bad purge valve. Could not pull vacuum on tank. So i injected low pressure air to tank with regulator on an air line. Could here leak near gas tank. Found leak with low pressure air. hpoe this helps

Great write up. I never found the vent valve the first time a had to fix this system. Great pictures. My p0440 just came back. The first time the cause was a hose at roll over valve and the purge valve. The easy way to troubleshoot is to pull the cansiter and pull vacuum on the three lines. I assume the vent valve is normally closed, and should hold vacuum with car off. (I think this is what i remember).
I bet my problem is the hose to the vent valve.
Thanks for the pictures.

I had just ran the codes on my new purchase today, the 1998 V70 XC and P0455 was the first code to come up among others.
I will likely wait until the spring to really dig into this vehicle, but I will refer to this write up for sure.
Nice job.
Awaiting its turn.
Awaiting its turn.
The previous owner also had topped off the tank completely when gas prices went down, at which point the fuel gauge stopped working. I believe it caused issues I had read about regarding the evap system as well.

I figure I will go through the whole thing. I have already grabbed a fuel pump from the pull yard.

Eric, when you remove the 10mm bolt from the bracket holding the carbon canister, is there enough slack in the hose for the canister to drop down and you can inspect the J hoses? Did you buy the J hoses from a dealer? I havent found the J hoses online.

On mine there was enough slack to drop it 3/4 of the way down. I didn't replace any of the hoses with OEM Volvo, rather went to the local AutoZone and bought varying size fuel injection line (by the foot), a couple of smaller molded coolant hoses (for the J-Hose and another bend), and an commercial assortment of hose clamps (ask the AZ parts guy for commercial hose clamps...a box of 10 is about 2 bucks).

I know the OEM hoses are readily available online and eBay but I didn't see the need and have had no problems. I think I spent around $20 bucks and redid virtually every vacuum line.

Thanks , my local dealer will have the three shaped hoses for me tomorrow for less than $20. I'll try line by the foot for everything else. I guess the three quarters was enough to give you access..
