99 T5 - no start after 2 months - low compression?

I think that clacking is firing cylinders. That is cranking pretty slowly though, definitely charge battery

Update - I replaced the battery and it fired up. Some clickety clackety noises that went away after a minute or two. I think the oil in the cylinders helped, but the battery definitely needed replacement.

On the way to Pep Fellas to get my batttery core deposit back I blew off a turbo hose I had forgotten to tighten, and after reconnecting it and proceeding I scanned codes in the parking lot and got a TCV code. Is that just because of losing the hose? I cleared it, so we'll see if it comes back.

Blowing off any induction on a turbo can generate a lot of spurious codes. I think the TCV code pops up immediately so if it doesn't come back today you should be good.
