96 854 n/a smoke under distributor cap

Not really.

I would suggest leaving the dipstick partially out to allow venting. Additives will do no good.

The real suggestion would be to do the PCV maintenance before a 700 mile trip.

Excess pressure can blow out the camshaft and rear main engine seals. The engine is removed to replace these 5 dollar parts, so it is a 1000 USd job. Keep that crankcase pressure down!

Should having the dipstick out slightly be able to relieve quite a bit of pressure? Can doing so actually prevent a blown seal?

Yes it will. I had to do that with my '93 for a week or so until I received the parts for my PCV system.

I simply wrapped a paper towel around the end of the dipstick to catch oil spatters and vapors.
