i appreciated these two sentences.

this sounds like something rubbing against something else. turn the wheel to the left and look in the wheel well for things that could be rubbing against the strut, the spindle, the control arm, or the tie rod. push up and down on the fender or bumper to make the car bounce: perhaps it's not the brakes making the noise, but the nose pitching with deceleration, which could explain the second, quieter spongiform utterance when you let go of the brake.

I'm going with dry, grungy linkage to MC. It sounds like left front wheel, because that's where the MC sits nearest. Try securing the Dr Abscate Volvo Garden a Hose Stethoscope near the MC to see if you hear the noise there or at the wheel.

Brake booster noise is another culprit.
