volvo in ny wrote: ok,,,I just searched the etm. I dont think this is the problem at all. That is more of an engine idle problem. Mine idles fine,,it just wont move until I rev the engine past 3000rpm...then I can tickle the gas pedal to keep the car at , lets say, 30mph. If I come to a stop and have to start there is the feeling that I'm just going to sit there revving the engine. Then you feel the bump and it slowly starts to go. Neutral was still drive and reverse went nowhere. I was only able to push the car backwards by turning the engine off. Then it rolled backwards,,shifter in reverse.

Assuming it is original, the mileage is too low for tranny to act like this -- a workhorse. What is the serial #?

EXACTLY the same symptoms as my '01 XC70 last year. No reverse and forward drives OK. Neutral had the car creeping forward as did Park. There was a cracked C1/C2 drum and original blackened fluid and many friction plates worn to metal. Reverse and 1st gear plates were fused. The tranny is still on my bench. Last owner was a single mom.

Thing is it only had 160, 000kms or 100, 000 miles.

where is the serial number on the trans? i'm not into computer controlled cars but if the trans breaks,,the display knows enough to show dashes where ''p r n d" should be? when its cool it runs decent for about a couple hundred feet (LOL). but like i said,,,the engine temp is already at normal range ..that fast. thats odd.

I think the 2001 year used a new transmission which turned out to be troublesome, so the earlier robustness of the model line in this category need not apply.

There is a steel plate on the top of the transmission. There is a serial number starting with 1C through to 1L if it's an early build and should have the B4 cover replaced.

The part number is probably 8636765.

The PRNDL display is a direct result of where the PNP is telling the TCM where the gear lever is located.

i didnt get to look yet. i'll try after work today.
my gear lever feels horrible. When i first got it, it was nice and stiff. now you can easily tap it to the manual shift side,,,very sloppy. sometimes i accidently bump it to manual and dont realize until i hear the engine whine in 1st.

I don't have any slush drive Volvos but I'm wondering if a loose shifter might be not correctly indicating position to the TCM?

damn!

i just took a look at the trans number and i couldnt make it out,,there was corrosion on the tag. I did make out the 55-50SN,,which probably doesnt help. That pnp switch is right there out in the open and easy to get to. I blocked the wheels, took of the clip and moved the lever by hand and it had nice firm clicks.
I started the car ...reverse went no where and neutral and drive went forward. The display showed the position and the check engine light was still there.
I read on another forum that the pnp can make the car go into ''winter'' mode by starting it in 3rd gear. similar situation but i still have no reverse.

Fused reverse and 1st friction plates caused by lack of clean fluid. NOT electrical.
