Re: 1998 S70 Dealer Charge for Timing Belt
Yeah, if you have to pay someone to do it it is going to cost big bucks. Most mechanics are going to use the "rate book" no matter how long it actualy takes. When I needed a head gasket replaced on one vehicle I owned I got a $3,000 rate book estimate. I ended up doing it myself in two days and saved about $2,500. It just depends on how willing you are to do the work yourself or just pay someone. Personally I got a lot of satisfaction out of changing the head gasket myself. I would not hesitate to do a TB om my Volvo myself over a weekend.

Our local Volvo dealer in Hawthorn charged an MVS member $1,700 for a timing belt change on an 850R and the accesssory belt fell off not more than one kilometre from the workshop after he shelled out. Part of that charge is the $175/hr for the trainee to do the job
As a point of comparison the new V60 T5 with 2 litre 4 cylinder 175KW engine costs $57,000 in our market.

That trainee must have a very steep learning curve...
As much as I can see from above, there is a distinct area of about 1 km radius in Hawthorn, all covered with belts - that's probably where the shop is located

Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

@shaker_chi ... For the labor amount mentioned above you better get yourself some tools and DIY. Fcpeuro.com has the parts and labor video.

Thanks Baptiste. I have done it myself on my 850, but I am busy at work and just wanted someone else to do it for a change. The dealer quoted me $650 this morning for parts and labor which I thought was pretty fair. On top of that i get 10% off because the car is over 10 years old.

Consider doing it yourself, I have average ability, above average tool box. When I did my 850 the first time, I started at 8 AM and was done by noon.
