Radiators are cheap and very easy to fit on the P2s. If you intend to keep the car a new radiator is a must if there's no history of replacement. From what I read it was replaced in 2007 at 95K and now it's at 184K. Time for a new one.
You don't want to spend all that money and then have the radiator fail later on. It's cheap insurance. This also means you don't need to test for glycol in the fluid saving you the expense and bother.
2001 transmissions generally fail because of dealer servicing which neglects replacement of the fluid every 30k-40k miles and because of poor valve bodies (mostly remedied if you choose a Volvo rebuilt transmission)

Thanks very much! Matt's post is about 3 years old and a lot has changed at the repair shop he recommended. Their reviews have been bad since the service manager (Brett) left. Think I found another option...
My Volvo is still at the dealership. They asked Volvo corporate to replace or discount a new transmission, but no surprise, they said no. I'm going to take a run at the service manager since the transmission they replaced in 07 was brand new and not once did they change the fluid. I've been dealing with them for 20 years/4 Volvos and I think they need to step up and do something. Most of the additional repairs they've identified are bogus dealer fixes acc to an independent Volvo mechanic. He said he could install a brand new 02 transmission for $4100. Is that a good price?

For a dealer, not bad
If you get them into the high 3s they can still make money

It's not a dealer price--that's what the independent mechanic quoted me. Would he have more wiggle room on pricing vs. dealer?

If it's an independent garage, then he would charge around $6-$700 for the installation, the remaining should be the price of the transmission. A brand new Volvo transmission is anywhere around $5000. BUT, can you be sure it's a brand new transmission? I have read about several people on forums that had 'new' (in fact, rebuilt transmissions that looked like new) that started having issues right after installation. Someone will correct me, but I think there is no such thing as a 'new' transmission.. they are all rebuilt units with a various degree of wear on non replaceable internal parts. This, of course, assuming the garage is honest and is not going to install a clean looking 100K miles transmission instead.
If you can find a local transmission shop, like this master , it will possibly rebuild your transmission so you have no more surprises. A wild guess, it should be around $1500 for the rebuild, and another $600 for the installation.

They're not 5K
Some dealers charge that WITH installation
A tranny (dealer) costs about 2K, retail sale price is 3K or whatever the traffic will bear

OPs chassis range gets her the cheapest of the AWD 55-50s at $2, 470.43 in Rhode Island (Tasca) or $2, 792.66 in Dallas (Volvo Dallas)
In Denver things may not be so competitive however it always pays to have some prices up your sleeve so you KNOW they can still make money on the deal.

Remember these usually have a core exchange

That's right usually $600 and if you need to ship the refurbed unit in and the core back you must factor in this price.
