'97 Volvo 850 Broken cv joint at hub

I said that the hardest part was to loose the center nut when i was removing old cv joint(6 months ago),not this one which broke.
Shaft is ok and the cv joint was installed like it should...to specs.

Very true. It takes more torque to break loose these big axle nuts than to tighten them. Something I was reminded of today when I broke a 1/2" drive Craftsman breaker bar on one them.

The Metelli CV joint is clearly defective and/or not designed to withstand Volvo's insane torque spec.

Due to my employment situation (or lack there of), I do get USED CV axles from junked cars. I try to pull the ones that look "newish" and have a Volvo sticker on the shaft. I have had NO issues with any of them that I have installed on cars around here.

Glad you were home when that happened and not on the road. I wonder if it could have tossed the axle into the transmission if it had broken loose at 100 km?

This is something one would want to put on the list of things one doesn't want to think about!

Replacement cv joint arrived yesterday and it's allready installed.Since i allready had a warranty and GKN isn't available in my country,it's Metelli again.

Now...the wheel hub is saying Hello to me...arghhh.

Last summer i replaced driver's side hub and now the passenger's side is bad.
