What is the brand of the tensioner?

Oem or aftermarket?
can't remember brand...likely an aftermarket from FCP or IPD. it is stamped "FPM", "INA", "Slovakia" among other things.

with the pistons dinged and 215k on the clock, do you think it is worth rebuilding the head and reassembly or should i just move on?

Well, I have 268,000 and running strong. If the car is nice, I'd fix it.

thanks rspi. i'm really torn as to what to do. i have about 1/3 of the work done with the tear down. i figure about $1500 in parts/labor to rebuild the head, gasket kit, timing components, misc parts, etc. the unknown, which seems unlikely, did the bottom end or piston/rings sustain damage.

the car is in fair conditions, not sure i would call it "nice". let me list the issues and see what folks would do...

leaking rear main seal
minor body issues
door panels
headliner
cracked dash
cracked/weathered upholstrey
rear hatch lock busted
nagging tcv code
prolly needs o2 sensors and a maf (not in the $1500 above)
compression at about 175k miles was about 160 in each cylinder
between the leak and was is burned, consume about a quart every 1500 miles or so (figured it was self-changing)
have quite a bit of carbon build up over the last 40k miles

Buy parts car for around 350-500$ and use whatever your car needs, especially the head,or just buy used head from junkyard.

Even if the car had few cosmetic issues, at 215k and with that list of existing conditions--especially leaking rear main seal and oil consumption--IMHO, it would be time to move on and find a suitable replacement that needed less extensive work.

It's surely a personal matter. Given the amount of work needed, I'd sell it for parts.

If most everything was running good, I would have put a new head on it.

Given the other listed needs, I think it's time to move on as well.

If you can afford to move on, do so.

thanks for all the input, much appreciated.

something that has been bugging me since i pulled the head. only the exhaust valves (and all 10) crashed, no intake valves. if the t-belt slipped, i would think both cams would lose timing and intake valves would crash also.

any thoughts?

It happens,there are no rules.

It might happen that all of them could be ok.
