Old style desiccant was more or less clay granules (cat litter, oil absorbent) and should be capped until installed. When the condenser with integral receiver drier showed up on vehicles the desiccant was changed to a different material, maybe it is silica gel - I'm not sure, as it is serviced as a cylindrical mesh "stick" that is removed and replaced out of the integrated cylinder on the condenser. These drier "sticks" come in a zip lock or thermal sealed long bag from the manufacturer so perfectly sealed and capped may no longer apply to those either. I would call IPD and ask them. All the receiver/driers and accumulators I have purchased, as recently as two weeks ago, have always been capped. I'm not sure if those have the new desiccant and will be effective if exposed to humidity in the air.
