Greetings. After much thought , I have decided to farm this repair out to my local Volvo tech. $ 255 labor for the front seals, $ 85 added for rear, plus parts. Thoughts and views respected. I read the write ups and watched the Youtube video. These are much appreciated, but time doesn't permit. But parts will be Volvo, SKF at the least. Up dates to come.

That may be a good choice. You really can't change the front cam seal on the exhaust side without a camshaft alignment tool and then you need to deal with the CVVT preload. It is all very doable by a DIY mechanic but the cost of the tool that you will likely only use once has to be factored in.

Well, I have one more question. Are these cam seals prone to leaking on their own, or with a blockage such as PTC valve , overlooked PVC or other ? If a blockage caused this leak and is cleared, would the oil leak possible stop ? I ask this because I would rather replace simple DIY things ( PTC, hoses , connectors) before "making it rain" on my repairman. This way if blockage was the cause I could avoid having this headache showing up in the too near future after install new seals. I'd rather send it to the shop with done before to avoid added " unforeseen cost." Thoughts and opinions respected !

I guess my answer would be "Yes". For whatever reason I seem to have more trouble with cam seals on the whiteblocks than I have with any other engines I have ever owned and I try to stay out in front of PCV problems. That said, PCV problems will greatly hasten the demise of the cam seals. While my son had his 850 off at college and it was pretty much on a zero maintenance schedule his PCV did clog up and he actually popped a rear cam seal completely out of the head.

I think many of my cam seal troubles were self inflicted problems though since all of my early replacements were with Elring seals since that is what FCP and eEuroparts sold. I have since switched to SKF seals and I have not had to replace one of those yet.

I think I'll do a little DIYing to check for clogs. Probably not this weekend. Can't spend time on this self centered, money hungry , attention seeker. Valentine"s Day is Saturday. Wife time is a required!! The real first love.

It may be possible that the seal was replaved before with one that had.failed already. The only failure i have experienced was with aftermarket seals. After replacement with Volvo seals, no more issues, years later now.
