Just to close this out officially.

After replacing and aligning the PNP switch the car would drive and shift fine for a short period of time (maybe 2 miles or so). Inevitably though the slushbox would get stuck in first and refuse to shift up. As a result I ended up starting my M56 swap much earlier than I had planned. I have no clue what the cause of the original problem but a new PNP switch did not completely fix it so instead I replaced the transmission.
