With a cv boot kit,big nut is included.
The old one can be reused without problems as long as it's not damaged.

Misha this is a 99 so no big 36mm nut, just a long bolt with 14mm head. They usually have a locking compound on the threads to avoid loosening.

Original poster was talking about replacing cv joint or just boot.I am pretty sure that he was talking about big 36mm nut.
What do you mean...."it's '99 there is no big 36mm nut"holding the axle? What is holding cv joint and axle if there is no big 36mm nut?
...or you are talking about inner 14mm bolts?

Front axle changed in 1999 to a small 14mm bolt that cannot be reused. It is stretched to application torque, Loctite is not a correct application here. Its cheap, you just have to remember to order one each time you remove the axle.

That's what I call progress in a thread
They tapped a thread in the centre of the cv axle rather than a thread on the outside. There is a yellow locking compound on new bolts (unlike in the photo). Call the yellow stuff what you like, it's still there to prevent loosening.

Just replaced the passenger side axle on my S80 T6 with an original Volvo part at $600. I can see no way that $100 will buy you an OEM spec quality replacement axle, but I could be wrong. In any case they're not available that cheap here in Switzerland. I do read a lot about poor quality Chinese-made $100 axles and I'd rather avoid having to go back in there anytime soon.misha wrote:110$ for aftermarket Skandix cv joint????
Gkn Lobro which is OEM for these cars is around 100$.

I was talking about cv joint kit NOT the whole axle
Btw..."Stealerships" are well known about their hot prices and lousy service all over the world. They are called stealership for a reason.
You can always buy oem volvo part which is not packed in their hot priced blue Volvo box.If you are feeling good to pay, let's say,300$ more for blue volvo box instead of any other box with the same part in it...go for it,i don't mind.

I still cannot imagine that this little thing can hold the axle and cv joint.Never seen this setup before.
I somehow have more trust in the big old 36mm nut.

Very little axial load on the axle. The hub and wheel are held on by the control arm, not the driveshaft. The nut just has to locate the driveshaft splines
