Agreed, those look clean there is not a problem due to cam seal leak. As long as you have it apart, I would pull that little plate from the end of the cam and eyeball the cam seal directly.

While a problem with the antenna ring would fit the description in the title of this post it really doesn't fit the behavior that you describe. Then again, the chipped key in a '98 with a Motronic ECU is a bit odd and I'm not sure how it is supposed to behave.
Typically with a bad antenna ring the car will start and then immediately die. No amount of throttle or revs will change that. Have you scanned the car? In the '99+ cars with the chipped key an immobilizer problem will set a P code but it won't light the CEL.

I have scanned the car probably about 10 times, the only code I pulled was p1618. I deleted the code and now it will not show anymore. anybody familiar with the P1618 code?
Does my volvo have motronic 4 4
all US 1998 volvo's come with Motronic from what I see here.

The P1618 is a transmission code that I think is related to the torque converter lockup circuit. I don't think it is related to the problem you are having now.

anybody hear of a bad ecm or a bad throttle body causing symtoms like this, again no check engine light. would a mechanics code reading be able to read something that I am not seeing?

What kind of scanner are you using? If it is reading codes then it is likely going to read all of the codes that are posted by the ECU. What might be helpful is live data.ryanread9229 wrote:anybody hear of a bad ecm or a bad throttle body causing symtoms like this, again no check engine light. would a mechanics code reading be able to read something that I am not seeing?
A whole bunch of stuff has been thrown out here but I think the only thing we have figured out for sure is that the distributor cap looks fine. What else have you done? Did you look at the IAC valve? If you can update with what you have inspected and determined to be good we can at least start to eliminate things from consideration.

My first thought was the IAC or hoses. This sounds like my old T5-R when the IAC hose popped partially off.
