You can buy Euro spec cars on the US tourist program btw. We might do this for our next car...when the BMW slusher hits 150

These engines were used up to 2001 when new model of v70 started.With new model,there was still 5 cylinder 2.5 turbo diesel engine,but this time Volvo developed their own common rail diesel engine.From 2001 to today,Volvo have it's own 2.5 5cyl turbocharged engine marked as D5.

Good engine...even better than newer Audi's 2.5TDI V6.Volvo never used their v6 diesel because older 5cyl inline diesel was more reliable.

By comparison the 2,4L 10V is only marginally slower in terms of acceleration and nobody calls that car quick. It is an old diesel, nothing like todays diesels that run very smooth.
In addition there will always be visible smoke due to how everything is setup. I wasn't talking about giant clouds - hence my comment that "rolling coal" indicates and issue with service. To be more precise it indicates incorrect pump timing or some fault with the injectors.

The thing about the V6 is completely pointless and wrong. Volvo didn't use that engine because it didn't fit, not for realiability reasons.

Yes i drove it.

Audi v6 diesels are just not reliable like old 5cyl inline diesels were.That's the fact....not my opinion.2.5 tdi v6 180hp with 6speed manual and dual exhaust(left and right side exhaust) is pretty fast...but older 5cyl diesels were better.

misha has the facts right on this one. And NEVER compare a gasoline engine with a diesel.

I'm not arguing about reliability of the 5cyl vs the V6. This was all about the "why they didn't use it" -> because there was no space for a V6.

What facts are you people talking about?
850 2,5 TDI: 0-100Km/h in 9,9sec; 200Km/h topspeed*
850 2,5 10V: 0-100Km/h in 10,0sec; 205Km/h topspeed*
*for cars with manual transmission

Data source: Volvo pricelist 1996 and 1997

You always compare diesel and petrol engines when deciding on which one to purchase. Don't see any problem with that.
