I bought replacement inner and outer tie rods on my '97 855 last year, thinking that it would be easiest to change both while I had it apart and also potentially avoid a second realignment. But when I actually removed the original inner tie rod ends, they were both tight and fine. I could have left them alone without much risk. Just my experience and interpretation.... :) Good luck!

Hello there ES,

It's mandatory that you do the whole front end, otherwise i wont be able to see how it is done :-)

Just kidding of course, but hey you'll have a little help anyway.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.
1998 v70, non turbo, FWD, base model, on the road from April 2nd, 2015 to July 26, 2023.

If I'm doing everything else should I replace the inners? I've never had one fail on me. Plus, I ran into some confusion on ordering based on what number is on the steering rack. I figured I'd just call my local dealer and order by VIN number and let them figure it out if I do end up replacing the inners.

You can twist the inner tie rods side to side to see if they have any play (they should be nice and tight with no play). Heck, if you have everything else out, why not replace them? They'll eventually go (the ones on mine went at 115K miles). You'll need a special tool to fit the collar of the tie rod end. I was "lent" one from PepBoys, paying $60 for the tool, then getting a full refund upon return.
