I took a picture of a regular sized can opener on a exhaust cam to show how it is too long. The bottom of the hook is smooth and has no chance of scratching a hardened cam shaft. Also the lip of the hook is short enough to not touch or scratch the bore of the cam cover. If you want you can round off the corners with a file but I don't think it is necessary. Mine pulled right out with no problems. Some openers may vary in size and shape so you be the judge.

I have used paint can opener, here is the thing: sometimes it works, sometimes not.
The metal is soft and under pressure, the paint can opener's hook is bent.

The Lisle tool is cheap $15 and is better, the hook is hardened steel.
