CHRA = Center Hub Rotating Assembly. It is the guts of the turbo, the part that spins and compresses air, connecting the hot and cold side of the turbo. It an be swapped separately or rebuilt.
OK I just looked under the car and the turbo is coated in oil! I can't check the shaft play without removing the turbo from the car? Is that correct. I took the inlet hose from the air box off and can not feel the shaft end...huh. I don't want to do this job.
I just got done putting new axles and lower A arms on the car and was gearing up to go thru the suspension. This car has been in the garage more than the road this year.

You can check shaft play by pulling the hose from the air box to the turbo. Reach in there from the top, grab the end of the center shaft with your fingers and wiggle it. Should be very little play. The turbos are typically coated in oil, especially when looking from the bottom, that by itself is not diagnostic.

Here is a video where they are wiggling it from the back (exhaust side) but it will give you an idea. Some radial play is OK, but there should be zero axial (in and out) play. This one has a lot of play, a little more than I would like but I have run Volvo turbos in this shape:

You can pull the turbo from the top , it is a hassle but only takes like 1-2 hours the first time.

Here is another short, good post about shaft play, although they are overkill on the "death sentence" comment, keep in mind that these turbos are super hardy: http://blog.fcpeuro.com/2014/03/08/turb ... bocharger/

Well the car finally let loose and smokes all the time now. I have water mixed in the oil and a sweat smelling exhaust. So, a new head gasket is in order.

As you can see I have the car apart other than the 13g turbo out of the car. I'm getting ready to bring the head, the cam cover and the new 15g turbo to the machine shop. Yes I said 15g turbo :), I got it last night at the pull a part.

Now any help in getting this lpt car to run correctly with a 15g turbo will be greatly appreciated. The motor is a 2.4 liter stock with a 13g turbo. I want to mill some off the head, add the 15g turbo with manual boost control and a new boost gauge possibly with oil pressure and voltage.

I just couldn't help myself, I figured if I was going this far into the motor I might as well make it a little faster.

The 15g will run fine as-is but in order to run with higher boost you would need to make a couple additional changes:

- T5 ECU
- higher flowing injectors from the same car as the ECU, to match the ECU

There are basically two ways to do this:
(1) Get an ECU from a 97 T5 850 and the orange injectors that came with it. This is the easiest.
(2) Get a 98 T5 tune flashed (programmed) onto any 95-98 ECU and get either the orange injectors or the white injectors from a 98 T5. If you do this, you must be careful to also flash the appropriate AC parameters so the climate control works properly. Don't just get a 98 ECU, the AC will not work and you will kill the climate control unit. You can also get rid of SAS during the flash, if the car currently has it. And down the road you can do things like increase the boost level at your option. Used ECUs are cheap these days.

There are detailed instructions out there for flashing an ECU, it looks complicated but it is not bad once you get into it http://m44.wikia.com/wiki/M44_Wiki. I am running m4.4 on my 95 with a 15g and oranges (its original injectors), and on my 98 GLT with a 15g and whites, they both work great. I'd be happy to help you with the ECU flashing, PM me if you decide to go that way.

Wish I knew enough to send the cam cover along with the head to the machine shop. I spend an evening cleaning the cam cover.

Thank you for the response! Unfortunately the t5 car I got the turbo from had the ecu removed there is a v70 t5 car with the ecu. It sounds like it will work if it's reflashed? I will be pm you for sure. The machine shop has the head as of today. I'm thinking I rebuild the 15g turbo also just to make sure it's correct. This car has been zeroed, so you know

A 97 850 is either Motronic 4.3 or Motronic 4.4, you have to check the VIN to find out (http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/199 ... n1997.html).

Regardless though, I am pretty sure that for your 850, any V70 ECU (well, any 98 V70 turbo ECU) would need to be reflashed because of the AC issue mentioned above. The pinouts are different in a 98. But if it is a 98 T5 then grab the ECU, it will work great.
