Heater core failures are very common on these cars.
There are several write-ups on the repair.
Be sure to evaluate the firewall coupling too. It is possible that the seals in it are ready for replacement.
I removed my firewall coupling altogether and ran conventional heater hoses from the engine to the core.

At this age mileage, this is what I did:
- New ebay heater core $45 or so. Make sure you get the Volvo OEM O-rings!
- Got rid of the firewall coupler
- Re-used the old barb fittings and rebuilt the heater hoses using new Gates heater hoses for a few $.
