What engine do you have on the car; I thought your S40 should have a 5-cyl., no?
If yes, then you have coil-over-plugs, one for each cylinder. It is (almost) impossible to mistakenly swap the electrical connectors between coils, and therefore your sparks should be timed correctly.

Once spark and correct timing are verified, I would check if the injectors are 'firing' at all. If they aren't, the 12V DC common power supply could be missing; if it is there, then it is the CPS
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Did you ever do a simple compression test? What did the spark plugs look like? Was there any gas or oil on them? Was the car started cold and then stopped right away right before it would not start again? Still would check the fuel injectors.
