Hi
Just want to start off saying the car has been running fine with no hiccups or warnings of something about to happen. The car ran fine all day until now. It's a 2004 s60 2.5t awd, I started it and let it idle in my driveway to let it warm up and everything was fine. I backed it out of my driveway and when it put it into drive and began to accelerate it lost power and the "D" on the cluster turned into a little dash "-". The tachometer also stopped working, and it felt like the car was in 3rd gear and wouldn't downshift., as if the car was in limp mode but there was no CEL. I drove it about 1/2 mile to a gas station and other than it not having much power it ran alright and it idled perfectly fine. When I went to start it back up after topping off the gas (it had over 3/4 of a tank before adding gas) the car started just as it should but wouldn't idle and just stalled out (still no tach signal) i started it 2 more times and still wouldn't idle so I tried to give it some throttle after starting it to see if I can keep it running to get it back to my house but no matter how far I pushed the gas pedal nothing happened and the car stalled. I let it sit for a few minutes and tries starting it again but this time all it did was crank and it wouldn't start... does anybody have any ideas??
Recap: no tach signal, no CEL , "D" became "-", loss of power and no downshift, went from idling perfectly to no idle at all, now it just cranks and won't start
2004 s60 cranks but won't start

I don't know the specific symptoms associated with crank sensor failure, but that's my first guess.
The ECU calculates the RPM from this sensor and generates digital data which the DIM merely listens to over the network to make the gauge work. With key in run position KPII (not trying to start the car), if you put the shifter in "D" does the DIM display "D" or does it continue to show "-"? The TCM would listen to the RPM data too, and wouldn't know what to do if the input shaft sensor on the trans says 1000 RPM but the engine computer shows zero engine RPM (or something less than actual).

With the car not running it displays the gears properly... I was also thinking crank sensor but it's weird how it ran fine then when I put the car into drive it started acting up, and no CEL. And it idled smooth and ran fine other than being in limp mode. Then once I shut the car off and tried restarting it wouldn't idle or stay running and I lost all throttle response..
I scanned the car and there was a big list of communication errors. There were 4 for the abs module alone, so I unplugged it and the car started and ran for a few hours. I have a used module on its way to the shop and hopefully it fixes the issues.

If it wouldn't start just before you unplugged the BCM, and it immediately started after, you might have it.

How many miles? I would check the electrical part. If it doesn't start, grab a neighbor and jump the battery post to post. If it starts, disconnect the cables and measure the voltage at the alternator, battery, inspect the wiring
Don't just replace the battery, make sure first the alternator is charging properly.
While there verify the pulleys on the serpentine belt with the belt removed, they should all be smooth

The issue has to be in a module somewhere and it's shorting out the cans bus and shutting everything down... hopefully everything is ok once I change the bcm but I'll keep posting what I figure out and hopefully somebody can offer some more ideas and help
