2004 XC70. trying to verify timing marks are correct

I know, the whole thing is a bit more tedious than the good old days of lining up marks and throwing the TB on. The whole slotted bolt hole thing and VVT without a pin or keyway makes the timing marks almost sound meaningless. And they basically are until it is all correctly set up.

You shouldn't have to completely redo the intake VVT if it wasn't loosened/taken off. Yes, you should check that it is at the CW limit. Personally, I would do a complete set up on both from scratch but you are probably ok if you just make sure that it is at limit.

For the 3 exhaust sprocket bolts, yes, let them stay loose, don't stop them from moving. This will let the sprocket float enough to line up with the belt teeth and timing mark. When you tension the TB, check the mark again. If you need to move the sprocket a tooth to have the mark line up, that's what the slotted holes are for. If the cam locks are in (and they should be), it isn't going anywhere. Check CW limit.

So, tension the TB, check for CW limit, then torque the 3 sprocket bolts. This will let the belt stretch out fully before you lock the sprocket down. The 3 bolts should also not fall at the extreme end of the slots.

Mine wound up just a little off center in the slots this time. My sprocket marks weren't exactly perfect either, but hey, those notches on the timing cover are big enough to drive through. The important part of course is setting the relationship of cams, VVT limits and crank. The marks are just a visual confirmation.

That's where I ff'd everything up, she runs but with a slight miss, I did a leak down just to make myself feel better but now that u say it I understand what I did. I tightened the 3 hub to sprocket bolts way to soon, anyway I'll finish tomorrow. I got the cams locked up and the crankshaft locking tool in the plug hole. I had to stop cause it was dark but I think I got it now. Thanks Sparky.

Hey, no problem. If you still have just a slight miss after this I'd have a look for a fouled plug or failing coil. I had coil issues recently.

This car ran perfect b4 tbelt/VVT hub removal and I thought maybe plug or coil issue, so I checked them out but unfortunately I found nothing. Like I was saying in my last post, after reading your description the process for reinstalling the VVT hub/sprocket it became clear where I went and would explain why she runs with a slight miss. If I was way off it probably wouldn't even start or worse you can damage something. The description in my Haynes repair manual is for a single side VVT Cam with only one cam sensor in the rear. I couldn't find anything on the web concerning the B5254T2 motor, I mean nothing.

I put everything back together properly, it was 3 bad coil packs. So she got all new NGK plugs and new coil packs...unbelievable!!

I couldn't figure it out cause it was 3 bad coil packs, I was swapping bad coil packs for bad coil packs. It ran perfect before hand but I'm thinking my father in-law fried them.
