I will try to clear up some of the confusion.
All of the individual gauges share the same basic electrical bits that move the needle(s). The only difference is the cover plate of which there are many, many different versions. By design Volvo never intended for the cover plate to be removed or replaced so it's glued onto the clear plastic that disperses the light.
It can however be removed if one so desired but it is much easier to just install the gauge as is. Sadly this does not mean that it will work as intended.
The cluster OP has bought is from a TDI (diesel) model, easily identified by the 5k rpm tachometer and 240kph speedometer. When the speedometer is installed in his presumably petrol model it will work fine. However the gauge position will be slightly incorrect relative to the actual speed. Petrol models got a 260 kph speedometer so the numbers on the cover plate are grouped a bit different. So the needle will be at the correct position, the number it indicates will be a bit wrong.
