Woah... that's not cheap.
Upgraded intercooler is probably a very good idea, though!

I will definitely do a rip kit, but an intercooler seems like a waste of $ if I'm not going to push insane boost, which I'm not

I almost did a big intercooler a year ago... but chickened out when I got a free used OEM intercooler. Needed to replace my blown OEM unit.

Without having run one and from the general feeling I get, a big IC slots in at about the second stage of mods, meaning after a Stage 0, tune, exhaust, hi-po ignition, and before internal engine work. It's at about the same level as N/A cams, bigger injectors, RIP kit.

That RIP kit/IC linked to above is expensive, but it makes quick work of two things at once. There's value in killing two birds with one stone.

Oh, this is Matthew. I'm on a test account, obviously.

This makes sense, thanks. I'm wondering what turbo came stock in my 97r . 16t? Or 18t what do these numbers mean, I know it refers to size, but is this the turbo inside dia. Or teeth on spline. I am wondering

Having had one of these engines apart I would strongly suggest you upgrade the rod bearings at a minimum since you'll want to push hi revs as you have fun with your increased hp.

Doing this, the problem you can solve is first you'll be getting new bearings and while you have the rod caps off you'll see the condition of your existing bearings and crank journals.

But second, by upgrading your bearing inserts you'll replace the Volvo stockers that DO NOT HAVE the little rectangular dimple on the bearing corner that locks the insert into the rod casting. The rod castings are made for it, why Volvo did not mate that feature of their bearings to the castings is hard to guess. Without that little dimple, hi revs x high compression can spin the bearing shell and then your lower end is toast.

Of course, while you have the oil pan off you can replace the oil pickup seals, too. If I were doing this, I'd probably pull the head and have it checked, then being that far in, pull your pistons, have them cleaned up, new rings and have the rods checked for straightness. Then you'll know what you're starting with.

And don't forget to use a tap to clean the thread locker out of the threads, especially on the long pan bolts at either end of the engine. If you don't you won't get a correct torque and could strip one.

Have fun!

Neil.
Do you mind sharing what you did to obtain your 310+ HP? Have you had it dyno'ed?

Most of us do understand that the vehicle has:
1. A 19t Turbo.
2. Angled flange.
3. Green injectors.
4. The RICA tune.
What else has been done?
5. What size exhaust down pipe?
6. RIP kit?
???
20% Is a nice improvement.

I know a guy that used a mustang dyno and was putting out 287 HP & something like 340 torque. He crushes 5.0 mustangs. 300 is a lot for these cars. To get 350 you will likely need to do the upgraded ic and meth injection.

Stock rods are known to bend out of shape when using for large power.

Google it. volvo 850 bend rods

The lower end is suppose to be good up to 400 hp. The problem is when people have bad tunes or manually boost the pressure at low rpm's. High boost at high RPM's is fine.

I would do the intercooler before the RIP kit. I have yet to see any proof the RIP kit does anything other than lessen the amount of piping. While I am sure that helps, I don't think it helps $300 or whatever they cost. The do88 intercooler is a good, proven mod.

What turbo are you running?
