MA, CT and RI only offer gasoline with 10% ethanol. It's the law or something...

My '98 has never flinched at different fuel sources.
And I can tell you some stories about temperature changes.
Actually, it likes the colder, denser air. Gives it a little kick.
I put Heet in my old "seasonal" '83 Dodge, but have never had
any reason to consider it in the Volvo. Fuel injection Good!

I'd consider having a look for something on the ignition
side if this happens again. Probably moisture related.

lol. my first thought reading that was "There is gas without ethanol?" Thanks for clearing that up as CT/MA/RI is >90% of my driving.

I am surprised. I have found that the availability of real gasoline is proportional to your geographic distance from Iowa. In Missouri and Kansas about the only place that I can buy unadulterated gasoline is at a marina or an airport. I was in Louisville, Kentucky on a small job a couple of years ago and filled up the Platinum with 98 octane real gasoline. I couldn't believe how well the car ran and how good the gas mileage was. I didn't even think of stopping to fill up until I was West of St. Louis which was about 65 or 70 miles further than a normal (e10) tank of gas will take me. Premium around home with the ethanol blend is 91 or 93 depending on the gas station.

Put new plugs/wires on it in the fall, should have done the distributor cap/rotor while I was at it...

98?! Wow! I'm taking a bucket to Kentucky ASAP. I've honestly never seen anything higher than 94 at a pump. 93 is the highest octane they sell here in MI.

You can probably get avgas at Landmark Aviation at GRR if you make some friends over there. Bring deep pockets though.

Remember that the US uses AKI instead of RON, while places that sell aviation fuels may use RON instead (since that's used in most of the civilized world ;) ). That means that what you call 93 or 94 is 98 RON. When I go to the gas station and get Shell V-Power, that's called V-power 98 Unleaded here, while the AKI octane is 93 or 94.

Running a turbocharged engine on anything below 91 AKI is not recommended (and even 91 AKI may not let a turbo engine produce full power), and running any modern engine on something under 85 AKI is highly discouraged. So, in short, add 4-5 to the US AKI octane numbers to get what the rest of the world is using. Or vice versa. ;)

I have the same problem here, we only have 91 Octane max. We used to have 94 but Sunocco a couple years ago pulled out of the country.
Although, in the winter I've used 89 Octane with no issues: no knocking and still good performance. I wouldn't try it in the summer, but Winter its fine.

My old Maxima demanded premium, but it would retard timing to run on regular. I tested a couple tanks of regular once. The drop in gas mileage almost exactly balanced out the slightly lower cost of fuel. Might as well go for premium on a car that wants premium.
