Okay, so it appears I have the mechanical tensioner. Hopefully that won't give me an issue with alignment when I install it.

If you have a distributor cap and leads it's a 99% probablility you have hydraulic.

@bm: they usually align just fine. I thought I had some trouble recently but it seems to have been false concern.
@Mike: Here in the States, many, many distributor cap 98's have the mechanical tensioner. I have owned three 98's so far, all shipped with mechanical tensioner.

That's what I had figured, that they would have changed to mechanical as they revised the rest of the engine (like going from distributor to coil-over-plug ignition).

It was a split year change as indicated by the engine # before/after build dates. We have an early '98 with hydraulic tensioner. Under the hood it's mechanically identical (including PCV system) to my '96--which I really like.
