You either have a bad TCM or a shorting out when hot wire from its harness
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

This might be the entire problem, but its depressing that Volvo can't tell you that because the TCM codes are their domain.
I think we need to get you someone with VIDA nearby.
I don't know if TCMs are married to the car like the ECM on a 1999 CANBUS but Henry and Mike will know that.
Well, that is less than helpful.....TCM-0039 is a ghost code. Because its the only TCM specific code, and there are no other TCM specific codes, the recommendation of the dealer tech (go figure) is to replace transaxle as a unit.
I wholeheartedly agree abscate...!

TCM is married to the vehicle right? Because we have to send an old one and a salvage part of same part no to XemoDex to replace one, correct?

OK, I was thinking about that too...because right now, I'm down toJRL wrote:You either have a bad TCM or a shorting out when hot wire from its harness
1) Junking the vehicle/selling it with a blown tranny for next to nothing
2) Installing a salvage transmission myself, but admittedly not knowing how to buy one or even if that will solve the issue because if its electrical then its for naught
3) throwing parts at it....as in a new TCM.
What would be a way to check the TCM?
How best to buy a salvage yard transmission? What do I need to do? What questions do I ask? Is there a place you forumites go to and trust? Do any of you local have one??

Thanks JRL, I have another friend who agrees with that.JRL wrote:You either have a bad TCM or a shorting out when hot wire from its harness
However, the 'whining noise' happens each and every time once it warms a little bit and in concert with the appearance of the flashing arrow and the CEL. Whining = pump cavitation, no? If its purely electrical then whats causing this whine? Almost sounds like its coming from ABS but as you can see no codes, no dash lights, no tracs light....you know I never did put a pipe or something on the ABS when the whine occurs, perhaps I should do that....

Everything on these cars is controlled electronically. Once a TCM is compromised, the transmission won't run well.

So then you guys recommend addressing the TCM and not the tranny? Car is still at Volvo. I could have them check all the TCM connections. Thoughts on that?

I am a great believer of trying the simple stuff first. It is worth having the TCM pulled and making sure all the contacts are clean. I have heard of them occasionally acting up as they get corrosion on the contacts. Didn't see if this had been done already.

Thanks. I have not pulled the TCM and cleaned contacts yet. Do you guys have a preferred contact cleaner you typically use?
