Get a piece of tube and use it to really isolate where the noise is. It sounds like it comes from the exhaust valve hub, but the phone audio pickup is not reliable. You will really be able to tell where it comes from with a tube in your ear. Report back

At 2:30 there's a visible VVT hub play. I had it replaced in our 2002 V70 about 3 years ago. Had strange noises too, different ones.

Yours can be gone too, it's not uncommon for these engines to develop a severe wear in hub's internals, especially if the car has a bad oil history.

I would also at least check if timing belt is properly aligned. B5244S does not throw a code even if you missed a couple of teeth.

Also engine is due to second t-belt replacement, if not done already.

My wife agrees that her V70 is a great car. She wants to sell my newer and generally more reliable but less comfy 2005 XC70 if we decide to buy a new Volvo

They claim it has a new timing belt. So I was thinking maybe they did not replace. Or properly adjust the tensioner. And when it is getting warm it is failing. And causing a slap in the belt? Maybe why the noise comes and goes. Because doesn't the tensioner open and close at different temperatures? I dont know. I am looking up vvt hub now. The more I know before taking it to a mechanic. The more money I can save.

The tensioner indeed has a temperature adjustment on it but I don't think that's the noise.

Your car has intake CVVT but no exhaust CVVT, but the noise seems to come from the exhaust hub in the video!

Hose trick will help isolate.

Ok. Here is an update. And I think the original location of the noise is not correct. I used the hose. And can not detect the noise any where near the timing belt. Or near it. On the back of the motor. This time it took about 15 minutes to present itself. And not very frequent. But I have discovered it is loudest under the car. Seemingly near the passenger side? Maybe even away from the motor? I dont know. I checked the exhaust tip. And did not seem to be traveling down or out of the exhaust. I made a couple of videos. With the noise. And without the noise. I will work at uploading othose now. Also under the car. It almost sounds like flapping? Or a puffing? Noise. Hopefully these videos help. Any ideas will be great. And thanks again!! For helping to trouble shoot this.

Ok. So here is a video of the car warming up. Absolutely no noise present. So you will believe I am not crazy. This just comes and goes. Took about 15 minutes before it presented it self. And I am posting that next.

Ok. I had pulled the top timing cover off to inspect that area more. And here comes the noise. Not very loud yet. And kind of coming and going. The next video im uploading is the one you will want to see.

Here it is. I think this video is going to give somebody an idea of what is happening. Notice. The noise just completely stops at the end of the video. Im starting to suspect an exhaust leak. And im not strong enough to free the bolts on the tire. To get it out of the way. But I put my hose onto everything I can reach. Exhaust. Exhaust manifold. Oil pan. I can not hear this noise coming from anything. in particular. And can not get under the car.

The noise is very obvious. I'm also curious what it could be, never heard this before. If you go under the car, please use a car jack stand for safety. To remove a wheel, you can place the lug wrench and push downwards (the side to unscrew the lugs) with the feet or even lean your weight on it.
