It's a AW55-50 transmission.

We don't hear about too many failures of them unless they're attached to P2 cars and especially AWDs. Sadly it doesn't sound too good for yours.

Try replacing the transmission control module before going to bigger things. It's normally about $30 at the junkyard. I fixed my '99 S70 that was in limp mode with the flashing arrow and no shifting. reverse worked fine but car would only stay in 3rd gear. put the new TCM in 10 minutes later the car ran like new!
