I'm with regent - check the dumb simple stuff like battery terminal connections, cables.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Is your fuel pump original? If this happened in any Audi I'd say that's what I would be worried about! The fact that you could bring her back to life feathering the throttle seems suggestive to me of a fuel issue. Any other clues, some hard starting, faltering of any kind, etc. loss of power accelerating, if even subtle? Anytime recently would count. As suggested, I'd drive it locally for a while until you're comfortable there is no pattern (and you are already doing that). Keep us informed. Uncomfortable feeling, eh?

going to look at it closer tomorrow -- bet anything it's that fuel pump relay like he said -- tried driving it again and it did it again, so it must be electrical and not a bad fuel or one time thing. is this fuel pump relay a common issue?
I'll test the relay tomorrow and jump the contacts and see if it stalls again.

I'll do some trial and error on that relay tomorrow -- the fuel pump is original -- 98 with 140k. if that ends up the problem, that may be a dealer repair? or is diy feasible?

ok looked into it -- if I do have to replace the fuel pump, looks like either you replace the whole assembly, pricey but makes it easier? or you just buy the pump and take apart that housing and install the pump. Is this correct?
what is best buy in a pump that is oem quality? -thanks

and looks like they have the bosch as well -- asking these questions in advance so I can start early tomorrow -- if the relay is bad, is the problem usually the capacitors in the relay? going to start there, electronics is what I do for a living.

Others may chime in, not an expert here, I'd replace FPR and pump if original and be done with it, OEM for both if you are going to keep the car. Others have used other pumps with success I believe. Lots of stuff in the database regarding pump replacement, testing. But bypass-replace the relay and drive a bit and see what happens first. OEM only for the relay, period, no AutoZone crap.

If the car fell on its face, then has more power than ever, I'd test the waste gate before you bend a rod.
