If it's the thermostat housing that is cracked- this and of itself will allow the coolant to leak like a sieve. This should not be a difficult replacement and no need to buy a new one- For much less $, certainly eBay would have them... also pretty much any junk yard. Just use a new gasket and install it properly. It would be a shame to ditch this car if this was the only issue it was having.

Probably not. Metal fatigue, poor casting, wrong torque value, etc all leads to crack of that housing. Metal doesn't last forever.
