General Altimax for me (although they discontinued the Altimax). The are about 2/3 the price of the Michelins and give much better traction over a decent service life.
I'll look harder for the Generals. I think they are more common up North.

My V70 is sort of a rolling tank to get me to and from work. I really dont care a lot about performance. The V70 is 18 years old and sort of a lead sled. So, its not capable of great performance. Reliability and low cost of operation are the only two things I hope to get out of this car. I don't need Michelin quality tires anymore - I bought them when my daughter was driving it. I need something that will last about 65000 miles, not make a lot of noise and will channel away water very effectively. We get downpour rainstorms in Atlanta that often leave a lot of water on the highways. I've hydroplaned one time and never want to repeat that again - no control at all.

Twice now, while foraging in the scrap yard for something else, I've come across P80s with Michelins in very good condition mounted on Volvo alloy rims. Someone apparently expected a lot more life out of their car before some twist of fate sent it to the scrap yard. But at bargain prices, I couldn't resist and now have two complete spare sets of tires/wheels for my V70 sitting in the garage. I just hope I can keep the car running long enough that I will get to use them.

I was wheel, tire and brake engineer for the big airline in Atlanta for a while. I'm definitely no expert because I was a stand in when the company went bankrupt but make sure you don't let those tires get too old before you use them. Tires have a shelf life. I wouldn't put tires on my car that were much older than 4 years old unless it was a temporary situation. The rubber dries out out eventually and blow outs happen.

What scrap yard do you use? I could definitely use a new source of parts.

Pull-A-Part. They have 3 locations in ATL area. Online inventory.
