2001 XC70 - Pumping out fuel tank

Perhaps we could use the jaws to cut the tank straps and drop the whole tank out. Then it would be easy enough to simply siphon out.

I'll have to go investigate how accessible they are. I'm assuming the tank IS held in with some sort of straps, yes?

Mostly unrelated, but does anyone know where the 2-speed fan relay assembly is located on this car? I might want to grab that for my own purposes. Anything else I should grab?

IF you are down near NYC, Cynthia could use a spare 2001 transmission - was it shifting ok or can you ask the donor?

Cutting the tank out looks like it would be a challenge, so nix that idea.

Just realized you have a complication on am XC. The tank is a saddle tank so you have to get fuel out of both sides...there is a center hump to clear the rear driveshaft. Make sure you get both sides empty before you start practice,

Yes, I discovered that when I took a peek underneath the other day. That's what re-energized my search for a pump-out solution.

Looks like I can try removing relay CMI12 (in the drivers knee area) and jumping the circuits (which ones?) or remove the rear passenger seat and look for an access cover and apply 12V directly. I'd be looking for blue and lack wires.

It's got over 200K miles, so probably not an ideal donor. Plus, it would be too much of a production to allow someone to remove it.

Changing the subject. You either have or had an XR4Ti Merkur?
I had two, an early 85 (eh) and a very late white 89, 9both new).
That one was built into a Cosworth 5000 clone and was one of the greatest cars I ever owned.
(Worst car clock in the world. After owning two of them, I still had to go to the owner's manual twice a year to figure out how to change the time)!

Only one? I've had a few. Most recent project turned one into a Ute. Search "Project XRBrati" for pics if you're interested.

Back on topic...

Cut the fuel line at the fuel rail, attached a hose to a gas tank. Found the fuel pump access panel under the rear seat (driver side) and snipped the blue and black wires. Using a 14.2 volt Ryobi battery, I powered the pump directly and out came the fuel. I think I've got about 12 gallons out so far, before it started sputtering.

The owner indicates that he had just filled it up before it died, so it seems there should be more fuel in it. So I'm wondering if there's any magic that needs to happen to get the fuel over from the other side of the saddle tank. Is there some sort of cross-over tube?

Why not just open the fuel tank behind the rear seat on the passenger side where the fuel pump is, lift the fuel pump out and pump the gas out from there? good job on getting most of it out anyway! Or you can turn the car up on it's side (several strong firemen should be able to tackle this!!) and let the fuel spill over from the saddled area?
