Offset is normal, probably due to the CVVT hub deflecting the cam sprocket.
Just set them horiz and use the locking tool.
Once you run the engine they'll go back to appearing offset again, no worries.
They all look like that.
I used a big screwdriver to lever the cam into proper position.

Pelican is also helpful

Also, if torque to yield is 120 degrees, then that has streatched the head bolts to 120 degrees, so one would need to go further (like 125-130?) if reusing the $20 worth of bolts.

This document is immensely helpful, but I have a question about the blue hub on my 2004 xc70: Two weeks ago, I removed it to replace the cam seals. (yes, I used the locking tool and made my marks). Over that time, the hub leaked out a lot of oil. Now, when I go to reinstall it (center bolt snug, but not torqued), the forward and backward rotational stops are not at firm as before. The hub used to prevent me from twisting it past the stopping point. But now I can twist it much further. It makes a soft oily slurp/pop sound when I pass the forward limit.

I feel like all the oil drainage changed something. is there a way to refill the hub before reinstallation? Or will this come back to life when i run the engine and the hub pressurizes again?

I bought a used hub as a backup, and it acts the same way.

Thank you for posting this. I'm doing this job on a project engine right now and this PDF has been very helpful.
