Pentosin CHF PWS fluid, comes in a rectangular green or silver can.
Thanks but too late. I already flushed it yesterday morning. The Petosin is what I was thinking of ending with. I flushed with cheap stuff and will end with something better. Do you use petosin in a 98 model car? The 98 only calls for ATF. I posted this thread hoping to find what people have had success with in a 98 that exceed the minimal requirements of ATF.
Yes, I used it in my '98 V70xc and now my 2000 V70xcse.

Pentosin CHF 11S is a synthetic hydraulic oil, with a green tint to it, used in special applications. For example, in our 2005 BMW e60 530i with sports package. The car has Active steering, where the steering ratio is variable depending on speed and Active Rool Stability, where the traditional front and rear stabilizer bars are replaced with hydraulically actuated sway bars, allowing the car to maintain zero roll during all driving conditions. The use of this Pentosin fluid will not work with traditional power steering. In fact BMW and Pentosin worn not to introduce this fluid into a power steering unit designed for a ATF product.

On our 98 s70 I use Mobil 1 Dexron III rated fluid and have never had a problem.

Thanks. I figured that would be the case, but that's why I asked. Occasionally something comes along that is better than what was originally specified. Especially if 18 years have passed.

Howard's Volvo discussed CHF's use in 99+ cars as the pump changed.

For me, I'm using the same DEXIII fluid in the PS that I use in the xnsmsn: Valvoline Max-Life HM 100% syn.... + ATP AT-205. Still no leaks!

From what I understand in BMW forums, the Pentosin CHF-11S is simply ATF but synthetic in nature.
Many BMW owners put the standard Dexron-III ATF in the PS reservoir that has the Pentosin label, zero issues.

I think the Pentosin was developed to address the COLD (the very cold climate such as -25C -30C or so), when the PS pump is a bit noisy for about 30 sec. Pentosin is a bit thinner (I may be wrong), so less noise.

The pumps are not that much different, the same classic vane type design.

Pentosin is not a replacement for ATF in traditional power steering systems as found in the 1998 Volvos. It is a synthetic hydraulic fluid for special applications.
