Can the Ultraguage show a MAF reading? As stated above the ETM usually reports codes so the likelihood of this being the culprit is low.
When I get a moment I'll run Vida on my 2000 V70 to show a MAF reading at idle and constant 2,000rpm so you have a reference.
It's still my daily driver for another 2 weeks or so until my T5 is on the road.

Yep, it displays live MAF readings. I of course don't know what the right readings should be but both MAF sensors behave the same.

Could be earlier ETM symptoms. I think 200K miles is unheard of on a stock ETM. ..but maybe the software upgraded replacement, that you most likely have, lasts longer. Does the car go into 'limp mode'?
If your symptoms are consistent, then the Xemodex flow charts will definitely help determine if it is the ETM.
Mine had no obd 2 codes or dash lights. It also seemed to fail only when warm, so I had to warm the car up before performing any tests. I bought the Xemodex ETM. Perfect. Money well spent.

You mentioned you may have a PCV system problem. If you pull the dip stick out slightly does the idle improve?

I'll try the dipstick in the morning, never crossed my mind. I bought the car with 154,000 on it, PO had the ETM replaced before 100,000 though I don't recall the exact mileage. I've got the paperwork for it somewhere. So he put at least 54,000 on the replacement before I got the car. I haven't touched it since I bought it and it's going to roll over 300,000 any day now. It doesn't go into limp mode and it runs fine except at idle, the rpm at idle doesn't fluctuate much but it shakes like it wants to stall and there's definitely misfires occurring. I checked out all of the vacuum lines, couldn't find anything out of order. Sprayed ether everywhere looking for a leak on the off chance it's an intake gasket or something, nothing there either. I'm leaning toward the etm still since cleaning it improved but didn't solve the issue. Everything else so far seems to be able to be ruled out.

I rolled 137k on my original ETM before replacement
I think absent the other stuff and 200k on your ETM the swap is probably the right step. Tough call for $500.

Is the ETS light on? Does it work?s10lowrider1994 wrote:Car is a 2000 V70 non turbo, almost 300,000 miles. Yesterday it started idling rough, today it got worse and was hard to start unless I kept my foot on the gas. Stalled out a few times going to the store and back but hasn't thrown any codes. I pulled the etm and cleaned it and the problem went away about 90%, it still hunts for a few seconds when you first start it and will randomly shudder at idle, though barely noticeable. The etm was filthy, car needs Pcv work but I want to figure the etm out first. Car has had the etm done under warranty but that was almost 200,000 miles ago.
Should I give it a more thorough cleaning or is it probably just on the way out? If so are those rebuild kits still available or is Xemodex a better option. Lastly if I pull a matching etm and Ecu from a parts car, will they link up or will I need them to be programmed to my car? I love this car and other than this issue it's great.

Not to be pessimistic but...
I had read that if you replace the potentiometer(TPS) , on the ETM, that you may have to re-cut the a new flat spot on the shaft to to get the proper sweep for your car. This, I am told(MVS), is how Volvo accomplishes the varied 'programming' that makes ETM swapping a 5 to 1 shot.
Should you go with the Xemodex ETM , they may not issue you the $100 core deposit if your original has been tampered or damaged.
That part is about $129 as well. If not for the probable extra modifications, the possible loss of another $100(core) should it become damaged and the possible repeated installing and uninstalling, I would have done the Sacer TPS replacement myself. Your call. Others and former posts may have more specific details. Just a little FYI.

ETS light works but isn't on, maybe it just isn't bad enough yet but it sure is annoying. I guess I'll try the Sacer kit and if all else fails, $499 for a xemodex etm isn't that bad if it keeps the car on the road.

I do not understand what you are trying to explain here??? Are you trying to say it does not work? Or that if it does not work you no longer have a core and have wasted $100 (or $200)?Kazthebassman wrote:Not to be pessimistic but...
