I thought it was 60,000 miles. Maybe I'm wrong.

Plugs are 30k
I usually do the rest every 100k or 10 years.

My guess would be bad CV axles if they are not Volvo.

My plugs were a few thousand over the 30k interval so I replaced them with new Volvo plugs this weekend. The plug wires (OEM), distributor cap (OEM) and rotor (OEM) are all at about 35K miles and they all look OK so I'll replace them at the next plug change or maybe after 3 plug changes.

The car idles beautifully now, although it wasn't too bad before. I numbered each of the plugs as I took them out so I could inspect them when I was done. They all look just about perfect around and near the electrode end.

However, number 4 had a very light wispy white coloration on the outside metal portion (hex part). The boot for the plug wire near the bottom also had the same light wispy white coloration. On the plug wire the powdery stuff easily rubbed off. On the plug its a little harder to remove. I researched this a little with Google on the internet and wasn't able to find anything definitive. There's plenty of info about color and deposits on the electrode end...not so much for wires, etc.

Do you know what the slight white powdery coating could be caused by? I've never seen it before.

No, it didn't. I didn't really expect it to, though. One the tools in my toolbox is hope. Hope rarely works, but sometimes it does. And when it works life is especially good.

I decided to go ahead and replace the plugs because they were well beyond the replacement interval. I've never owned a car in recent times that required plug changes so frequently so I did even think about it much after the last replacement - I figured I had another few years. I don't like to let things go so when I found out they needed to be changed I did it ASAP.

I would like to have some idea about the white deposits on he boot and outer plug body. I posted my question early this morning - no comments yet. I've never seen anyhing like i. Number 4 had a powdery something sort of like a light dusting of talcum powder. The electrode area looked just like all the others - normal. On the internet I read the dust could be due to a slightly loose plug and escaping exhaust gas, water in the plug well, cracks in the plug wire insulation, arcing...none of those comments came from definitive sources, just some guy making a comment. My wires are bougicord and hey have about 35K miles on them - should still be good for a long time.

A picture is worth 999 words here.

I suspect it's just Aluminum powder from the head and nothing to worry about

I don't have a picture and its too late to get one since I wiped it all off and reinstalled. I worked with aircraft for years and know what aluminum oxide looks like and although this looked a little like aluminum oxide the marks went from the boot area at the bottom all the way up the boot to the inside top. It was also much whiter than the typical aluminum oxide whitish grey. The marks curled around the boot upward almost like an imperfect helix. The boot only touches aluminum at the bottom and is centered in the hole the rest of its length. So, it wouldn't make sense to me to have corroded aluminum powder on parts of the boot that don't touch aluminum.

I'm not particularly worried about it but its not normal and I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea what it might be.
