I don't know of any P80s that are 2001 build; last one would have rolled through the production line in August or September 2000, though we did get the P2 early (late 2000) in the UK and Oz markets.

Summary changes from 1998-1999 from Matt (in VRD)

98- cars don’t have the electronic throttle, VVT, solid lifters, as do (most) 99+ cars. 99+ cars use cartridge-style oil filters, where as 98- cars use canisters. if you were looking at a turbo, 99+ cars have engine oil coolers on the oil pan instead of in the radiator. 99+ T5s switched to the 16T turbo instead of the 15G that i think the 98s got. 99+ cars have a revised radiator design that still cracks. 99+ cars use a mechanical timing belt tensioner, whereas 98- cars used a hydraulic tensioner. the 99+ tensioner is more finicky, from what i’ve heard.

Details on the engine number change from hydraulic to mechanical tensioner for the timing belt, courtesy of RickHaleParker

1998 S70/C70/V70/XC/R:
Hydraulic tensioner engine serial number --- 1266127.
Mechanical tensioner engine serial number 1266128

On edit - my 1999 T5 V70 has Exhaust VVT, oil pan oil cooler, 16T turbo, mechanical TB tensioner

I believe 1998 models used 16t turbos as well. The last 15g cars were 1997 model 850 T5s/Rs. Some 1998s used mechanical timing belt tensioners too, mine has a mechanical tensioner.
Very few 1999 models had hydraulic lifters, from what I have heard (T5s, at least. Not sure about GLT or N/A cars). Not sure of the serial number split, but I am curious. My cousin's T5 has some very noisy lifters, and I'd like to know if that car has the solid lifters or not.

Valve stem diameter changes at some point during the 1999 MY, from 7mm to 6mm. This probably accompanies the change in lifters.

well... if nothing else this explains a lot about The Falcon... just passed one year anniversary of being ours lol.
There was my epic WTFery over discovering the 302mm discs with the required larger brackets (which isn't stock on a '99 V70R) and whether the new calipers would fit with the older, also-not-stock brackets (short answer: yes)
This bucket was built 10/98 for model year 99... Are there variations within model years on these cars, the way I've seen with my Subarus? Literally "2006:Jan-August 2006: August-December".

There are mid year changes, including:

Mid 1999 change to a single motor for blend and direction on ECC

Parking brake shoe size I believe this is fake news...

I've seen an early 1999 with the reservoir style PS pump

I had hydraulic lifters in my 1999 NA but I can't tell you the build date.

From what I can tell, my cousin's '99 T5 has hydraulic lifters. It's a late '98 production, I think August.

Lifters change from hydraulic to solid, and valve stems from 7mm to 6mm, at engine 1817653 for T5s. I think that's pretty far into the run - my Dec '98 T5 has engine s/n 15xxxxx.

That's interesting. I don't know why they didn't just change everything over at once when they started using the RN motors. It just adds to the confusion.
