precopster,
Thats exactly the procedure I used, except I was able to do it alone.
If you are under the car, you can use your left hand and put your finger in the hole for the bolt and feel not only the band, but the hanger grab tool as well.
I ended up using my left hand to push down on the hanger to get it to grab down on the band. Then when I felt the hole for the bolt, I installed the bolt by hand to insure that it was correct.
I then installed the piston and cover then tightened up the bolt.
It took me about 2 hours to do, but I think most of that was walking away to stand by the wood stove to warm back up.

It should also be noted that the bolt has a tapered smooth end on it.
So the hole doesn't need to be exactly perfect, When i did it, the band was a little towards the back of the transmission.
The tapered end of the bolt was able to grab it and pull it center.
If you are doing this, and you can feel the hole, you should be good. But make sure you can screw the bolt all the way in by hand. Then when you let go of the hanger, it shouldn't suck back into the transmission. If it does, then you didnt capture it.
But basically, if the hanger doesn't spring back, then you should have it.

It also saved my transmission third gear!!
I have now some delay in changing gears but hope a relearn procedure will correct this.
FYI, the play I measured before the band locks is around 12mm.
Thanks a lot for sharing those informations! So helpfull!
