Hi again Steve,
Since you know how to do this, what do you think about the soapy water test?
That would be where we pressurize the system with a light duty fish tank air compressor pump and 'paint' some soapy water on the hoses and connections and look for 'blowing bubbles'. Similar to check for air leak in a tire.
Sound like it would work? Not sure how hard it would be to get the soapy water everywhere it is needed however.

I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Sorry, booted reply on your soap test.
It's obviously a help , can't hurt test. If you see bubbles, you have a leak. A few psi pressure is probably needed though.
Maybe cut a connector of and old Freon can and attach a bike pump and pump it up to 7 psi?

Hi again,
Sounds good. Just one more quick question...
Do you think there will be any place in the system where we can not get to in order to see any possible 'bubbles' ?
in other words, when we do the smoke test, where do we look for the leaks which i guess would show smoke?
What i am wondering now is how does the system test the gas cap. I guess it checks the whole gas tank then too?
That would mean i'd have to wet soap down the whole gas tank or do i have this wrong?

How to eliminate vacuum leaks
Get a piece of paper.
Draw out your vacuum diagram and size each and every vacuum hose in inside diameter and outside diameter and length.
Go to your FLAPS and buy hoses and clamps
Systematically remove and replace all your hoses on your car.
Repeat every 10 years.

We read here time cand time again....
“ ...the vacuum hoses look ok....”
Well, you can see half of them , so how’s can’t they look ok?
I chased a rough 4 cylinder idle like an idiot for a year before I did the inspection the right way; removing each hose and plugging/ blowing looking for splits. My evap purge line was split in two over 15 cm, the rest “ looked ok”
Smart people will realize once you have done the labor to take them all off, you shoulda replace anything over 10 years old.
