'98 V70 Stick, Non-Turbo, FWD -Mystery sound like turbo spooling up @ between 2K & 3K RPM

Can you pull the serpentine belt off? Start the motor up for a moment without it and listen. That should narrow down the culprit.
If the noise is gone, carefully inspect the alternator, PS pump etc. for possible bearing failure.

If the noise is still there, put the belt right back on and come back here for more useless information :lol:

So my mechanic stuck the long screwdriver on all of the possibly offending pulleys yesterday morning while I revved the engine up. He says the noise isn't in a pulley, but we can't figure out exactly where it is coming from. I'm back to suspecting a vacuum leak of some sort. I'll keep looking and keep reporting.
