Does it restart right away and do the same thing?

When was the last time the ignition parts were serviced?

I would check fuel pressure with a gauge and see if the fuel delivery system is good.r

After it dies, it goes right back to cranking and it will take about 10 seconds before it turns over. I don't believe that the ignition parts were ever serviced. Checking the fuel pressure and the whole fuel system what the first thing I did. Also, this is the first Volvo I've ever owned so I don't know if this is normal, but when I turn the key to the run position to get the car to crank, the key stays without me having to hold it there. It doesn't go back to the second position when you let go of the key.

No, that isn't normal. The key should return to position II when you release it from position III.

Replacing that ignition switch, electrical part, will likely cure that starting problem.

Yes, definitely. It seems that a spring has broken in your current switch, rendering it broken. You will need to get the cylinder made for your key, though. Easiest way to do that is get it through the dealer.

Why would I need to get a cylinder made for the key. Couldn't I just replace the switch?

Well, it might actually work that way. I haven't had to replace an ignition switch on this car, so I don't know for sure. I think that you just replace the switch part, now that you mention it.
I was thinking about how the key tumbler isn't springing back. That might be part of the switch rather than the tumbler.
