It's probably worth doing a drain and fill of the 3-4 liters and evaluating the fluid for particles. It sounds. Like the diagnostic fork we are stuck at is TCM or transmission.

I changed the serpentine belt and seems to have reduced how intense the rolling out or quick grab of the transmission only in shift up and shift down in 1-2 gears. It still happens at the end of the day. Runs awesome early n the day.

I went by the transmission place who replaced the fluid, not the filter, saying the filter is virtually impossible to replace so it would have only been the fluid. Suggested the valve body issue as abscate mentioned and they said as the fluid heats it will leak through finer areas. I asked about using more viscous fluid and the guy said, "no." He said I might as well do a rebuild at that point and quoted me $4,100.

Is there a transmission fluid that will perform better at higher temperatures so it doesn't breakdown and "leak through the finer areas" as the transmission mechanic said it would?

abscate - I'm not familiar with what you're referring to diagnostic fork or "stuck at is TCM or transmission."

Wait a minute, can some of these apparent shift quality symptoms also be attributed to a failure of the alternator pulley (overrun/clutch type) that is used on these? He mentioned that if felt a little different with a new serpentine belt.

+1. I'd do a complete fluid change at home ( no need to drop the pan like the guy did and use the Toyota Type IV ATF not the Mobil 1). I'm not sure I'd return to the garage who quoted $4000 to refurbish the transmission. After the fluid change, if it doesn't improve, I would replace the three main solenoids - not a bad job and new solenoids are all $250 off Ebay (Rostra). The solenoids will need calibrated as the old ones were. Here's how to get to them, perhaps a 3h job at a knowledgeable specialist
