Re: '02 V70 XC AWD Pre-purchase Questions
MIJ just landed a $300 good runner in TN - incredible deal..He did have to put a serp belt on it, though.

Serpentine belts aren't too bad. Timing belts are another beast entirely.

cambelt on the 2.5 is actually an unusually easy job, no need to remove the crank pulley. basically with lifting and removing the front wheel, if the cam gears are locked, it's perhaps a less annoying job than to replace the serpentine belt (which requires a long handle ratchet and ideally a helper to help sliding the belt properly on all pulleys because one hand has to keep the tensioner released)

Actually the DEM on Haldex AWD (post 2002) is mounted extremely low and is the AWD controller for the AWD fluid motor in the rear differential.
If you plan to launch small boats or a dinghy/canoe from a boat ramp think twice before you purchase an XC70 that is post 2002; the rear mounted DEM will most certainly get wet and moisture will enter the circuit board. In some cases the board can bring down the Canbus and stop the car totally.
The earlier AWD system, though fussy for front/rear tire sizing matching is more robust in these conditions. You still have the angle gear mounted next to the transmission on both systems and it adds to labour costs due to poor access of the rear of the motor.

I wonder if that's because the potting fails over time.
I don't have a boat, but I might in the future. Might be worthwhile to pull it and re-pot when I get it. I'm an EE by trade so things like that don't scare me.
But thanks for the good information!

The 2002 V70 XCs have a Bosch throttle. Volvo kept the Magnetti Marelli unit during 2002 for non turbo models.
The 2002 XCs have newer engine sensors (cam sensor is on the intake cam and made by Denso and crank sensor is also updated and made by Denso)
Apart from a Bosch ECM and MAF Volvo pretty much is divorced from Bosch for engine management devices.
I thought the '03 and up had Bosch Electronic Throttle Bodies.

2002 turbos had a Bosch throttle unless they were a C70 or V40, S40
I personally own a 2002 XC70 and have worked on afew of them. If it was built after September 2001 that's usually the cut-off date for Magnetti throttles.
It's also in all the Volvo dealer lists and in Vida as being so.

They make special serpentine belt tensioner tools(I have a GearWrench) ideal for relieving the tension off the serp belt. The serp tensioner on the Volvo models have a slot for a steel pin that will hold the tensioner in place after you relieve tension off the belt. This allows you to replace old serp belt, actually most replacement tensioners come in the box with the steel pin that holds the tensioner in the non tension position.oragex wrote: ↑22 Apr 2017, 15:22 cambelt on the 2.5 is actually an unusually easy job, no need to remove the crank pulley. basically with lifting and removing the front wheel, if the cam gears are locked, it's perhaps a less annoying job than to replace the serpentine belt (which requires a long handle ratchet and ideally a helper to help sliding the belt properly on all pulleys because one hand has to keep the tensioner released)

I've never had more than a few minutes to get the belt on once I figured out the routing. Never had the special tool, either. Get the wrench on and make sure you can fully move the tensioner to the stop before you route the belt
