Keeping the tank above 1/4 is no secret, and goes a long way to preserving the pump ...

How are you still on the original fuel pump! :o

At 200K, I'd say you're doing something right to keep it going: always keeping your fuel tank clean? replacing your fuel filter every 75K? putting in some fairy juice every 5K? What's your secret!!
Original fuel pump and fuel pump relay! Since the girls started driving the gas tank tank rule is 1/8 in summer and 1/4 in winter. I've noticed I never see the "guy idiot light" anymore. Fuel delivery in the 99 changed, I wonder if that helped too. We also have sexy Italian throttles.

I know it's not because of anything I did but oddly enough ... all of my Volvos have an original fuel pump relay! Well, except I have swapped them around in various ways while testing out extra relays from the junkyard. I don't keep track anymore of which relay is where but every car has one original-grade relay (i.e. date code in the 1990s) in the fuse box, plus one original-grade junkyard relay in the glove box, just waiting it out ...

With fuel pumps I have not been so fortunate, needed to replace several.

Rather than tempt fate, I elected to replace the FP relay at 180K. The pump was also replaced, as was the fuel filter. When either the cheap relay or the more expensive fuel pump goes, it could cost me more for a tow or a cab ride. If my daughter is driving at night, I don't want her sitting on the side of the road waiting for me or AAA to come to the rescue.
Fuel pumps and relays do have a life expectancy, neither are difficult to replace. A nice warm day at my choosing is better than -10F on the side of the road or a parking lot.

Yes, preventive maintenance is a common and well justified practice. There are many parts on a car, different cars are used in different ways, we make our choices.

Is the alternator making a lot of bearing noise, or is it not delivering the proper voltage? The voltage regulator can be replaced with the alternator left in the car, requires phillips screwdriver. If the bearings are making noise, have the alternator rebuilt at a local electrical shop.

Are you looking at the 1997 R for $2500? With 208K miles, I would expect both sets of wheels to be included. Make sure the AC doesn't leak! And he has maintenance records for you to look at.
