Another observation. When I turn the right directional on,. the left rear parking light flashes in sympathy with the right rear directional,. When I switch on the Hazard light switch,. both rear directionals and both rear parking lights flash,.

For what it is worth, the car has a factory trailer hitch. I have had no experience with this as it has a European socket for the trailer lights and I will need an adapter to hook up my trailer lights,.

At this point I believe I have replaced all the bulbs, using 1156 & 1157 as required,.

Is it possible to mis-install the bulbs and sockets in such a way that the incorrect terminals are being powered?

SUCCESS

I spent days fooling around with rear lights. Might never have thought to check front lights without this:

Following that poster's lead, I checked the right front directional bulb. Voila! I found solder creep between the terminals. Using my trusty pocket knife I cut a groove through the solder, reinstalled the bulb and all is as it should be.

A lot late to the party here, I was given a 98 V90 a few months ago and lost my mind trying to get the brake lights and tail lights working. I discovered it indeed was the contacts between the bulb socket and tail light assembly. I just gave up on using original parts as I figure the same issue will happen again later on down the road. I put in aftermarket sockets for the tail lights and hard wired them into the wiring harness.

Try your hazards/emergency lights. Does that work when headlights on?

If you wikipedia Volvo 900 series. The 960 in late 97 was renamed v90 and a.s90 two diffrent cars prob almost exactly the same. Left trunk is your light bulb sensor. It's a blue box. You have.to pull up the carpet and the almost all the fabric stuff. I would start there because that is where all you're lights that you are having problems with go to. They all meet there then go to its designated bulb the. Back to the dash. Also all your wiring for the tail lights run Right under the driver side door when its closed(obv). Also check the trunk when you open and close it and or jam stuff in your trunk there are alot of wires passing through to the trunk left side(right where the shock absorbers/I'm gonna call it a hinge because I cant think of the word this second) something could have been nicked or cut.and touching other things.
