Nothing out of the ordinary in the oil, have yet to drop the oil pan. In the subject of lifters, which is probably my next focus, can they be replaced individually?

Before dropping the oil pan, I would really focus on and around that thermostat area for something simple that got bumped or dislodged. Fuel lines, vacuum hose on end of intake, injectors leaking, underside of injector cover, loose injector connector, etc. I once put my hand on the silver injector cover to support myself and one of the injector seals started leaking on start up.

On your 98 with hydraulic lifters, yes.
And if you get to dropping the pan, have the parts to replace the O-rings for the ports to the top-end.

Hold off on dropping the oil pan or tearing off the top end. Fuel rail and ignition system next ... unless you like wasting time and money.

All good advice thank you all!
- around the thermostat area everything is back like it should be. I’ve knocked that intake vac line loose before and have learned my lesson on being careful
- I agree with not removing the oil pan without the new pick up seals ready. I am going to try a motor flush with new oil and filter, then change the oil and filter again to restore oil pressure and clean what I hope to be clogged lifter inlet holes. Question: will it hurt anything to run the engine to circulate the motor flush or should I pull the fuel pump relay and just crank at short intervals?

Should be able to idle it safely with oil flush - usually isn't suggested to drive it that way however.

Flushed with motor medic(that’s all wal mart had) and new oil and filter, let it idle for 5 minute, let it sit for an hour, drained and refilled with fresh oil and new filter. The tapping is still present. I’ve not found any metal whatsoever in any of the oil that’s drained out so I’m hopeful that whatever’s going on is under the cam cover.
Back to lifters?

Hey I just noticed you're in Charleston too! I wish I could help more, but I'm not sure I'd be able to offer any better advice in-person than what everyone else is already offering. Why couldn't you have an easier problem so we could fix it together over some beers?

I think what RHP is suggesting, is that the noise is misfire induced, despite no codes. also just as a troubleshooting step, disconnect plug wires one at a time, see if it stops, you'll know where to look. after that check for a clogged injector maybe.RickHaleParker wrote: ↑04 Feb 2018, 10:37 Hold off on dropping the oil pan or tearing off the top end. Ed, you could fly over and help with that and some beer!

haha since around 295000 I’ve been chasing after easier problems, and I’ll be sure to let you know when one comes up. The beers are always cold here.

That makes sense, although if there’s bad lifters won’t the sound be the same, just running rougher without a cylinder? It actually idles pretty smooth, but that tick is there. ( I know that sounds idiotic)
