- If you critically look at the parts from a "scientific standpoint"...
* The TB is rubber (or whatever material they made it from), which ages with time/mileage/heat.
The belt is barely 11 years old. I just replaced the TB in my 2005 XC90, at 12y/110K, it showed minor cracks but still OK.
* The tensioner pulley is metal and bearing and should last some 120K or so.
* Ditto for the idler pulley.
* Serpentine belt and pulley: similar issues.
* Aisin WP lasts about 180K-200K.
- So if you are purist, then I'd say change ONLY the TB (since it is rubber) at about 13y/80K. Or open the TB cover once a year a nd check the condition of the TB (look for fine cracks on the surface).

Yeah, I looked into that before when you mentioned it last time. It only applies to that one engine and PZEV emissions combination, and only the ones sold in those five states. AFAICT, that version was tuned differently than normal (different belt tension, speed, etc) so I'm not willing to trust that higher number in all the other versions even if it's the same physical belt. At the very least, it doesn't make sense to me why Volvo would claim all the others have a shorter lifespan for no reason.

I’ll bet 100 check engine lights there is not an iota of difference betweenness these engines.
What happened is this.
The Feds invented something called the Partially zero emissions vehicle, or PZEV
Manufacturers were encouraged to sell a certain percentage of PZEV
One requirement of being PZEV is a 150k/15 year warranty on major engine parts.
I bet if you go to parts lisle and look up the part numbers for the vin 39 timing belt it’s the same as Theva others
Reasonable conclusion? The Timing belt system MTBF exceeds 15 years/150k miles
I took a stab at trying to gather some actual data and found it supported that conclusion

Or Volvo gambled that the risk associated with eating warranty claims between 105,000 and 150,000, in the few states that required it, was minimal. Or at least quite diluted in the overall market.

So I'm still not clear here- How many belts are in this car? Besides the timing belt itself, some shops claim I need to replace "both drive belts" whereas other shops only mention "the drive belt". None of them have said "accessory belt". Same deal with the pulleys and tensioners.

One other belt. It's got one tensioner pulley. The other pulleys for it are servo, generator, AC compressor and crank pulleys. It needs to come off to reach the timing belt and is something like $10-15 so it doesn't make sense to not replace it at the same time.Durenol wrote: ↑24 Mar 2018, 05:05 So I'm still not clear here- How many belts are in this car? Hej po tay! (read phonetically)
"Accessory" has 4 syllables. "drive" has 1. There's your reason- "drive" is easier to say.
EXAMPLES:
A) Transmission Flush = A pan drop, filter and gasket change and top off with fresh fluid. 15 syllables
B) Transmission Flush = A simple drain and fill. 6 syllables
C) Transmission Flush = Hooking a car up to a powered fluid exchange machine with or without pre-treating the fluid with a solvent or cleaner. 32 syllables
They'll sell you with the fewest syllables but always charge you 'accordingly'.
Abbreviation leads to happy sloppiness at billing time.

My belt had 12 years old and 102000 miles on it and already a small 1/2" surface crack on it (a single crack while the rest of the belt looked smooth). I did knock it against a wall and it sounded like solid plastic, while the new belt would make a sound more like plain rubber.

I double checked my Owners Manual (2001 V70, all engines), and the Timing belt interval change is 105k miles (168k Km). No mention of any limitation due to years.abscate wrote: ↑21 Mar 2018, 16:42 The spec for a US V70 is 120k miles, 10years, first occurring.
Unless...
You have a VIN 39 car
In which case the exact same parts are changed at 150k miles, 15 years.
There is no reason to rush the job, inspect for oil and cracks as mentioned above.
Yes, Volvo pumps really do last 20years, 200k...as in my 99
It may be that Volvo has updated their maintenance schedule for later years/models. I recommend the OP check his Owners manual for his recommendation from Volvo.
My experience, and common sense, is that I would not change my timing belt at 45k miles. I actually did mine at 107k and 11 years, but feel it could have gone longer. If you are not worried about the cost, and want piece of mind, change it now.
