It's like this every time with these P80 engines, pretty unnerving! Intuitively, leaning in to a long lever arm with steadily increasing torque seems better than hard jerks to get them started, then repeat until they are loose. I've not broken one (yet? knock on wood) so don't have first-hand experience but over the years the left-handed-bit-with-guide approach has given a lot of success for people on this forum.
