Broken bolt head leads to Broken Extractor Bit

Post by ericmci »

So-

1999 S70 GLT
I twisted the head off one of the 14mm bolts at the top of the lower engine mount, the one with the pad on the passenger's side.
And to top that I busted an extractor/ EZ Out tip inside it.
I was able to safely remove the other top 14mm and both 17mm that go to the subframe.

What's my best option for removing this mount?
It looks like those 14mm bolts at the top bolt into a sort of spacer/plate that secures itself to the block with two 14mm on the left side and one small 11mm right next to the serpentine belt.
If I remove that plate I believe the mount will come with it.
At which time I can I can either install a new spacer plate and engine mount together or take the plate and drill it out with
a vice or press.
Does this sound reasonable to anyone?
Any help would be appreciated.
I would be happy to elaborate with more details.

Thank You!

Hi ericmci, can you try and post a picture? I can't quite recall what this all looks like so pictures will help me to be able to advise. I think I understand what you are asking but it has been 3 years since I did this job last on a FWD P80.

Thanks so much for the quick response.
I think I have a decent photo of it here.
This shot is before the extractor bolt-
I had my hole drilled nice and center. I heated the housing till it was basically white hot- PB Blaster- all day long and paraffin wax.
I took my time and it still broke the extractor. I believe the original bolts were re-used when someone did the first lower mount replacement and torqued them to infinity and beyond.

The arrow is pointing to the backing plate/spacer? Not sure what it's called, but it does look like if I managed to get that off
then the mount would come with it.
There is a refrigerant line that partially obscures the third 11mm bolt under the serpentine belt on the right side of this
but if this will solve the problem then I am willing to work on that.

I can get a clearer shot in the morning of anything if you need it as well.

There is some sort of copper alloy in the engine mount which seizes and grips those bolts like the Devil.

I threw my ezouts into a lake years ago, after the last of many snapped off hardened steel extractors in problem bolts.

I’ll find and post the diagram of the mount you need to remove, I’m pretty sure you are on track though

Oh- this is excellent.
So there is some kind of adapter that the mount goes into.
You wouldn't happen to have a part number? I'm sure the Volvo parts guy I work with can determine it.
I will have to buy it in advance so I will have it on hand while I support the engine and pull that off and with it that Damn
mount. It would be great to get it from a salvage yard but most yards here just rest their cars on the soft ground. Hopefully, it's still available and not crazy pricy.
I had no idea that it had some special copper alloy. It was insanely tightened too, so not a good combo.
Do you know the point of that piece the mount bolts into- is it some kind of spacer to make up for nivomat options?

Yeah this is was my first real broken bolt I couldn't dremel off - the first one stuck in something I wasn't removing and I was Not impressed with the strength of that EZ out.

Thanks So Much for your help.
I am doing this job in my apt parking lot and having some help really means a lot.

Also- Bolt no.47 has a refrigerant line partially blocking access I can see where there are a couple of 10mm bolts that secure guides for those lines and I have remove them but I can't see how to move it out of the way enough to get a socket or wrench there.
Any suggestions on how to safely get at that no. 47?

I have a funny feeling that I had to do the same as you at one time and remove the rear place complete to get the engine pad off as the bolts wouldn't move. Good then get heat on it and shock it loose. The dissimilar metals Volvo loves to use is often a pain due to road salt helping them meld together.

Hmm- True I might be able to shock in loose or cut into the mount with a dremel and put the adapter piece in a vice to work that broken bolt free.
We'll see what availability and price is for that piece.
It's a shame to not reuse a perfectly good piece of metal but if it's cheap enough I'm going to chock it up to regaining some needlessly lost time. :)

I'll keep you posted.
Thanks again.

Check with abscate. He has parted out a few cars so may have this part spare. There were 2 different engine pads and your car is around the time I think they changed so check for sure.
